RESUMO

The impact of shale gas extraction on surrounding environmental media remains unclear. In this study, the current state of contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are high-frequency contaminants of shale gas, was investigated in the soil surrounding emerging shale gas development sites. The source analysis of PAHs was conducted in the soils of shale gas extraction sites using positive matrix factorization (PMF). The health risk assessment (HRA) was calculated for ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation exposures, and the priority sources of PAHs in the soil were jointly identified by PMF and HRA to refine the contribution level of different individual PAHs to the carcinogenic risk. The results showed that both Sichuan and Chongqing mining site soils were contaminated to different degrees. Shale gas extraction has an impact on the surrounding soil, and the highest contributing source of PAHs in the mining site soil of Sichuan was anthropogenic activity, accounting for 31.6%, whereas that in the mining site soil of Chongqing was biomass combustion and mixed automobile combustion, accounting for 35.9%. At the two mining sites in Sichuan and Chongqing, none of the three exposure pathways (ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation) posed a carcinogenic risk to children, whereas the dermal exposure pathway posed a carcinogenic risk to adults. Health risk assessments based on specific source assignments indicate that when managing soil pollution, the control of fossil fuel combustion and vehicular emissions should be prioritized.

RESUMO

Drought is a major obstacle to the development of naked oat industry. This work investigated mechanisms by which exogenous Streptomyces albidoflavus T4 and Streptomyces rochei D74 improved drought tolerance in naked oat (Avena nuda ) seedlings. Results showed that in the seed germination experiment, germination rate, radicle and hypocotyl length of naked oat seeds treated with the fermentation filtrate of T4 or D74 under PEG induced drought stress increased significantly. In the hydroponic experiment, the shoot and root dry weights of oat seedlings increased significantly when treated with the T4 or D74 fermentation filtrate under the 15% PEG induced drought stress (S15). Simultaneously, the T4 treatment also significantly increased the surface area, volume, the number of tips and the root activity of oat seedlings. Both T4 and D74 treatments elicited significant increases in proline and soluble sugar contents, as well as the catalase and peroxidase activities in oat seedlings. The results of comprehensive drought resistance capacity (CDRC) calculation of oat plants showed that the drought resistance of oat seedlings under the T4 treatment was better than that under the D74 treatment, and the effect was better under higher drought stress (S15). Findings of this study may provide a novel and effective approach for enhancing plant defenses against drought stress.

RESUMO

The optimized winter wheat sowing method comprising wide-belt sowing (WBS) can improve the ears number and biomass to increase the grain yield, compared with conventional narrow-drill sowing (NDS). The seed rate and the interaction between the sowing method and seed rate also affect yield formation. However, the effects of the sowing method and seed rate, as well as their interaction on biomass production, particularly the interception of solar radiation (ISR) and radiation use efficiency (RUE), are unclear. A field experiment was conducted for two seasons in southern Shanxi province, China, using a split-plot design with sowing method as the main plot (WBS and NDS) and seed rate as the sub-plot (100-700 m-2). Our results showed that while WBS had a significant and positive effect, increasing the yield by 4.7-15.4%, the mechanism differed between seed rates. Yield increase by WBS was mainly attributed to the increase in total biomass resulting from both the promoted pre- and post-anthesis biomass production, except that only the increase in post-anthesis biomass mattered at the lowest seed rate (100 m-2). The higher biomass was attributed to the increased ISR before anthesis. After anthesis, the increased ISR contributed mainly to the increased biomass at low seed rates (100 and 200 m-2). In contrast, the increased RUE, resulting from the enhanced radiation distribution within canopy and LAI, contributed to the higher post-anthesis biomass at medium and high seed rates (400 to 700 m-2). The greatest increases in total biomass, pre-anthesis ISR, and post-anthesis RUE by WBS were all achieved at 500 seed m-2, thereby obtaining the highest yield. In summary, WBS enhanced grain yield by increasing ISR before anthesis and improving RUE after anthesis, and adopting relatively higher seed rates (400-500 m-2) was necessary for maximizing the positive effect of WBS, and thus the higher wheat yield.

RESUMO

Under abiotic stress, plant root exudates can improve plant growth performance. However, studies on the effect of root exudates on the stress resistance of another plant are insufficient. In this study, root exudates (REs) were extracted from Suaeda glauca to explore their effect on alfalfa seedlings under salt stress. The results showed that the plant height and fresh weight of alfalfa significantly increased by 47.72% and 53.39% after 7 days of RE treatment at a 0.4% NaCl concentration. Under 1.2% salt stress, REs reduced the Malondialdehyde content in alfalfa by 30.14% and increased the activity of its antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and catalase) and the content of its osmotic regulators (soluble sugar and proline) by 60.68%, 52%, 45.67%, and 38.67%, respectively. Soil enzyme activity and the abundance of soil-beneficial bacteria were increased by REs. Spearman analysis showed that urease and neutral phosphatase were related to the richness of beneficial bacteria. Redundancy analysis confirmed that urease affected the composition of the soil bacterial community. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) revealed that REs had a direct positive effect on alfalfa growth under salt stress by regulating the plant's injury and antioxidant systems, and the soil bacterial community had an indirect positive effect on alfalfa growth through soil enzyme activity.

RESUMO

Owing to the highly parallel network structure of the biological neural network and its triggered processing mode, tactile sensory neurons can realize the perception of external signals and the functions of perception, memory, and data processing by adjusting the synaptic weight. In this paper, a piezoresistive pressure sensor is combined with a memristor to design an artificial tactile sensory neuron. The polyurethane sponge sensor has excellent sensitivity and can convert physical stimuli into electrical signals, and the chitosan-based memristor has stable bipolar resistive switching characteristics, allowing further information to be memorized and processed. The neuron can respond to tactile stimuli of different degrees, durations, and frequencies; realize potentiation/depression modulation, paired-pulse facilitation, and spike-timing-dependent plasticity; exhibit spike-rate-dependent plasticity; and store and erase tactile information through memistor state switching, which has great application potential in biological sensing systems.

RESUMO

PCDD/Fs are dioxins produced by waste incineration and pose risks to human health. We aimed to detail the health risks of airborne and soil PCDD/Fs near a municipal solid-waste incinerator (MSWI) for the surrounding population and develop a new model that improves upon existing methods. Thus, we conducted field sampling and then investigated a MSWI in the Pearl River Delta (2016-2018). Our results showed that the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk values of PCDD/Fs exposed to residents in nearby areas were acceptable, with hazard index (HI) values lower than 1.0 and a total carcinogenic risk lower than 1.0E-6. Notably, the results raised concerns regarding higher non-carcinogenic risks in children than in adults. Comparative analysis of the frequency accumulation diagram, accumulated probability risk, and the absolute value of error (δ) between the 95% confidence interval (CI) and the 90% CI of the Monte Carlo stochastic simulation-triangular fuzzy number (MCSS-TFN) and the MCSS model, respectively, demonstrated that the MCSS-TFN exhibited less uncertainty than the MCSS model, regardless of the health risk value of PCDD/Fs in ambient air or in soil. This observation underscores the superiority of the MCSS-TFN model over other models in assessing the health risks associated with PCDD/Fs in situations with limited data. Our new method overcomes the limited dataset size and high uncertainty in assessing the health risks of dioxin substances, providing a more comprehensive understanding of their associated health risks than MCSS models.

RESUMO

Despite the advances of multistep enzymatic cascade reactions, their incorporation with abiotic reactions in living organisms remains challenging in synthetic biology. Herein, we combined microbial metabolic pathways and Pd-catalyzed processes for in-situ generation of bioactive conjugated oligomers. Our biocompatible one-pot coupling reaction utilized the fermentation process of engineered E. coli that converted glucose to styrene, which participated in the Pd-catalyzed Heck reaction for in-situ synthesis of conjugated oligomers. This process serves a great interest in understanding resistance evolution by utilizing the inhibitory activity of the synthesized conjugated oligomers. The approach allows for the in-situ combination of biological metabolism and CC coupling reactions, opening up new possibilities for the biosynthesis of unnatural molecules and enabling the in-situ regulation of the bioactivity of the obtained products.

RESUMO

The MYB transcription factor (TF) are among the largest gene families of plants being responsible for several biological processes. The R2R3-MYB gene family are integral player regulating plant primary and secondary metabolism, growth and development, and responses to hormones and stresses. The phylogenetic analysis combined with gene structure analysis and motif determination resulted in division of R2R3-MYB gene family into 27 subgroups. Evidence generated from synteny analyses indicated that CqR2R3-MYBs gene family is featured by tandem and segmental duplication events. On the basis of RNA-Seq data, the expression patterns of different tissues under salt treatment were investigated resulting CqR2R3-MYB genes high expression both in roots and stem of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa ) plants. More than half of CqR2R3-MYB genes showed expression under salt stress. Based on this result, CqR2R3-MYB s may regulate quinoa plant growth development and resistance to abiotic stresses. These findings provided comprehensive insights on role of CqR2R3-MYBs gene family members in quinoa and candidate MYB gene family members can be further studies on their role for abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants.

RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the surgical outcomes and safety of the follower arm endoscope holder in assisting type Ⅰ tympanoplasty. Methods:The clinical data of 16 patients who underwent type Ⅰ tympanoplasty at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, from November 2022 to September 2023 were retrospectively analyzed, among which 8 cases were operated by traditional otoscopy and 8 cases were operated by supported endoscopy. The surgical procedure was analyzed and the completion of supported endoscopic operation was observed, while the duration of the operation, the time consumed by the main steps, the frequency of wiping the lenses, the perioperative complications, and the improvement of the postoperative hearing were recorded and statistically analyzed. Results:Supporting endoscopic technology achieved real-time suction of bleeding, simultaneous traction and separation of tissues, precise removal of calcified spots on the inner side of the eardrum, trimming of the external auditory canal flap, stable separation of the handle of the malleus and the eardrum, and tensioned repositioning of the skin-cartilage flap. The average duration of surgery, time for external auditory canal flap preparation, and time for repositioning the skin-cartilage flap were reduced in the supporting endoscopic surgery group compared to the control group. The average lens wiping frequency was significantly lower in the supporting endoscopic surgery group compared to the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in postoperative hearing improvement between the two groups, and no infections or the need for secondary surgery due to eardrum re-perforation occurred postoperatively. Conclusion:Supported endoscopy technology realizes the need for endoscopic two-handed operation and convenient switching between one and two hands, accomplishes many operations that cannot be done by traditional endoscopic surgery, solves the problems of previous intraoperative one-handed operation and image instability, shortens the average operation time compared with traditional otoscopic surgery, and decreases the frequency of intraoperative wiping of the lens significantly compared with traditional otoscopic surgery, which is potentially worthwhile in terms of shortening the learning curve.

RESUMO

Excessive irrigation and nitrogen application have long seriously undermined agricultural sustainability in the North China Plain (NCP), leading to declining groundwater tables and intensified greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Developing low-input management practices that meet the growing food demand while reducing environmental costs is urgently needed. Here, we developed a novel nitrogen management strategy for a typical winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the NCP under limited irrigation (wheat sowing irrigation only (W0) or sowing and jointing irrigation (W1)) and low nitrogen input (360 kg N ha-1, about 70 % of traditional annual nitrogen input). Novel nitrogen management strategy promoted efficient nitrogen fertilizer uptake and utilization by both crops via optimization of nitrogen fertilizer allocation between the two crops, i.e., increasing nitrogen inputs to wheat (from 180 to 240 kg N ha-1) while reducing nitrogen inputs to maize (from 180 to 120 kg N ha-1). Three-year field study demonstrated that integrated management practices combining novel nitrogen management strategy with limited irrigation increased annual yields and PFPN by 1.9-5.7 %, and reduced TGE by 55-68 kg CO2-eq ha-1 and GHGI by 2.2-10.3 %, without any additional cost. Our results provide agricultural operators and policymakers with practical and easy-to-scalable integrated management strategy, and offer key initiative to promote grain production in the NCP towards agriculture sustainable intensification with high productivity and efficiency, water conservation and emission reduction.

RESUMO

Deep fertilization strategy has been proven to be an important fertilizer management method for improving fertilizer utilization efficiency and crop yield. However, the relationship between soil chemical and biochemical characteristics and crop productivity under different fertilization depth patterns still needs comprehensive evaluation. Field tests on spring maize were therefore carried out in the Loess Plateau of China for two successive growing seasons from 2019 to 2020. Four distinct fertilization depths of 5 cm, 15 cm, 25 cm, and 35 cm were used to systematically investigate the effects of fertilization depth on soil physicochemical parameters, enzyme activity, and biochemical properties. The findings demonstrated that although adjusting fertilization depths (D15, D25) did not significantly affect the soil organic carbon content, they did significantly improve the soil chemical and biochemical characteristics in the root zone (10-30 cm), with D25 having a greater influence than D15. Compared with D5, the total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available nitrogen (AN), Olsen-P, dissolved organic carbon, and nitrogen (DOC and DON) in the root zone of D25 significantly increased by 12.02%, 7.83%, 22.21%, 9.56%, 22.29%, and 26.26%, respectively. Similarly, the urease, invertase, phosphatase, and catalase in the root zone of D25 significantly increased by 9.56%, 13.20%, 11.52%, and 18.05%, while microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (MBC, MBN, and MBP) significantly increased by 18.91%, 32.01% and 26.50%, respectively, compared to D5. By optimizing the depth of fertilization, the distribution ratio of Ca2-P and Ca8-P in the inorganic phosphorus components of the root zone can also be increased. Therefore, optimizing fertilization depth helps to improve soil chemical and biochemical characteristics and increase crop yield. The results of this study will deepen our understanding of how fertilization depth influence soil properties and crop responses.

RESUMO

Red soils are characterised by acidic pH and limitations in carbon, nitrogen, water, and soil structure. To overcome such limitations, improved soil aggregation is the key to improving the physical and chemical properties of soil. Applying organic amendments such as straw can lead to corresponding soil aggregation and stability changes. Therefore, we explored the short-term effects of rice straw amendment, either alone or in combination with biochar, on improving the carbon fractions, stability, and composition of soil aggregates in red soil with a history of vegetable planting. The study consisted of four treatments: control (no organic material, CK), biochar alone (5% homemade straw biochar, B), straw alone (12% rice straw, S), and biochar with straw (5% homemade straw biochar + 12% rice straw, BS). Our results showed that equal amounts of straw and biochar substantially reduced the number of mechanically stable aggregates (MSA), mean weight diameter (MWD), and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of the soil. BS treatment reduced >0.25 mm aggregate content (R0.25), MWD and GMD by 24.06%, 56.81%, and 62.19%, respectively, compared with that of the control. The addition of straw greatly enhanced the water-stable macromolecular content and stability coefficient of the soil, but treatment B had no obvious effect. The S treatment had the greatest effect on R0.25, MWD and GMD, increasing them by 143.94%, 246.67%, and 181.82%, respectively, compared with that of the control. Soil organic carbon (SOC) was significantly increased by straw addition and carbonisation treatment, and the effect of the BS treatment was the best, with an increase of 325.63% compared with that of the control. The organic carbon content in the aggregates of different particle sizes treated with different organic materials also increased significantly. In the soil reactive organic carbon fraction, applying biochar alone did not affect microbial biomass carbon (MBC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), or easily oxidized organic carbon (EOC) but could increase the particulate organic carbon (POC) content. All the treatments with straw application significantly increased the MBC, DOC, EOC, and POC content, and the highest effect was obtained by applying both straw and biochar in an integrated form, i.e., the BS treatment. In conclusion, the co-application of biochar and straw sequestered more carbon and revamped soil C pools than either biochar or straw alone and could be a promising option for the sustainable use of red soils to ameliorate the aforementioned limitations associated with this soil type.

RESUMO

Compared with proteins, DNA and RNA are more difficult languages to interpret because four-letter coded DNA/RNA sequences have less information content than 20-letter coded protein sequences. While BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers)-like language models have been developed for RNA, they are ineffective at capturing the evolutionary information from homologous sequences because unlike proteins, RNA sequences are less conserved. Here, we have developed an unsupervised multiple sequence alignment-based RNA language model (RNA-MSM) by utilizing homologous sequences from an automatic pipeline, RNAcmap, as it can provide significantly more homologous sequences than manually annotated Rfam. We demonstrate that the resulting unsupervised, two-dimensional attention maps and one-dimensional embeddings from RNA-MSM contain structural information. In fact, they can be directly mapped with high accuracy to 2D base pairing probabilities and 1D solvent accessibilities, respectively. Further fine-tuning led to significantly improved performance on these two downstream tasks compared with existing state-of-the-art techniques including SPOT-RNA2 and RNAsnap2. By comparison, RNA-FM, a BERT-based RNA language model, performs worse than one-hot encoding with its embedding in base pair and solvent-accessible surface area prediction. We anticipate that the pre-trained RNA-MSM model can be fine-tuned on many other tasks related to RNA structure and function.

RESUMO

The development of artificial photosynthesis systems that mimics natural photosynthesis can help address the issue of energy scarcity by efficiently utilizing solar energy. Here, it presents liposomes-based artificial photosynthetic nanocapsules (PSNC) integrating photocatalytic, chemical catalytic, and biocatalytic systems through one-pot method. The PSNC contains 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl) cobalt-porphyrin, tridipyridyl-ruthenium nitrate, oligo-pphenyl-ethylene-rhodium complex, and creatine kinase, efficiently generating oxygen, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), and adenosine triphosphate with remarkable enhancements of 231%, 30%, and 86%, compared with that of molecules mixing in aqueous solution. Additionally, the versatile PSNC enables simulation of light-independent reactions, achieving a controllable output of various target products. The regenerated NADH within PSNC further facilitates alcohol dehydrogenase, yielding methanol with a notable efficiency improvement of 37%. This work introduces a promising platform for sustainable solar energy conversion and the simultaneous synthesis of multiple valuable products in an ingenious and straightforward way.

RESUMO

Hot exciton organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters can balance the high performance of a device and reduce efficiency roll-off by fast reverse intersystem crossing from high-lying triplets (hRISC). In this study, an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophore of 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-(pyren-1-yl)phenol (PyHBT) with the typical characteristic properties of a hot exciton is developed. With high efficiency of utilization of the exciton (91%), its yellow OLED exhibited high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.6%, current efficiency (CE) of 16.8 cd A-1 , and power efficiency (PE) of 17.3 lm W-1 . The performance of the yellow emissive "hot exciton" ESIPT fluorophores is among the highest recorded. Due to the large Stokes shift of the ESIPT emitter, non-energy-transferred high-performance white OLEDs (WOLEDs) are developed, which are reproducible and highly efficient. This is possible because of the independent harvesting of most of the triplets in both complementary-color emitters without the interference of energy transfer. The PyHBT-based WOLEDs exhibit a maximum EQE of 14.3% and CE of 41.1 cd A-1 , which facilitates the high-yield mass production of inexpensive WOLEDs.

RESUMO

The recently discovered plastic/ductile inorganic thermoelectric (TE) materials open a new avenue for the fabrication of high-efficiently flexible TE devices, which can utilize the small temperature difference between human body and environment to generate electricity. However, the maximum power factor (PF) of current plastic/ductile TE materials is usually around or less than 10 µW cm-1 K-2 , much lower than the classic brittle TE materials. In this work, a record-high PF of 18.0 µW cm-1 K-2 at 375 K in plastic/ductile bulk SnSe2 -based crystals is reported, superior to all the plastic inorganic TE materials and flexible organic TE materials reported before. The origin of such high PF is from the modulation of material's stacking forms and polymorph crystal structures via simultaneously doping Cl/Br at Se-site and intercalating Cu inside the van der Waals gap, leading to the significantly enhanced carrier concentrations and mobilities. An in-plane fully flexible TE device made of the plastic/ductile SnSe2 -based crystals is successfully developed to show a record-high normalized maximum power density to 0.18 W m-1 under a temperature difference of 30 K. This work indicates that the plastic/ductile material can realize high TE power factor to achieve large output electric power density in flexible TE technology.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) exist after agricultural operations and thus present potential hazards to the environment and human health. However, the ecological risks posed by MPs carrying pesticides remain unclear. In this study, the adsorption and desorption behaviors of two pesticides, azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin, on degradable and non-degradable MPs of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polyethylene (PE) were compared before and after UV aging. Additionally, the bioaccessibility of MPs carrying pesticides within a condition simulating gastrointestinal fluids was evaluated. The results showed that, after UV aging, the adsorption capacity of PBAT for pesticides decreased, while that of PE increased. Moreover, PBAT possessed higher adsorption ability towards both the pesticides due to its higher specific surface area, pore volume, contact angle, and lower crystallinity, as well as stronger van der Waals forces, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding indicated by theoretical calculation. Bioaccessibility experiments showed that azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin had a higher risk of desorption from PBAT than PE, which is mainly dependent on the LogKow of pesticides according to the random forest analysis. In brief, the study highlights the potential risks of degradable MPs carrying pesticides to human health and the ecosystem, especially when compared to their non-degradable counterparts, manifesting that the ecological risk posed by degradable MPs should not be ignored.

RESUMO

Objective: We introduce a novel endoscopic middle ear surgery dataset specifically designed for evaluating deep learning (DL)-based semantic segmentation of chorda tympani. Methods: We curated a dataset comprising 8240 images from 25 patients, divided into a training set (20%, 1648 images), validation set (5%, 412 images), and test set (75%, 6180 images). We employed data enhancement techniques to expand the picture size of the training and validation sets by 5 times (training set: 8240 images, verification set: 2060 images). Subsequently, we employed a multistage transfer learning training method to establish, train, and validate various convolutional neural networks. Results: On the validation set of 2060 labeled images, our proposed network achieved good results, with the U-net exhibiting the highest effectiveness (mIOU = 0.8737, mPA = 0.9263). Furthermore, when applied to the test dataset of 6180 raw images and contrasted with the prediction of otologists, the overall performance of the U-net was excellent (accuracy = 0.911, precision = 0.9823, sensitivity = 0.8777, specificity = 0.9714). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that DL can be successfully employed for automatic segmentation of chorda tympani in endoscopic middle ear surgery, yielding high-performance results. This study validates the potential feasibility of future intelligent navigation technologies to assist in endoscopic middle ear surgery.

RESUMO

The composition and form of selenium in the soil have significant effects on the selenium content of crops. In this study, we investigated the selenium absorption pathway in plants by studying the interaction between nitrogen fertilizer and soil selenium. Our results showed that the selenium concentration enrichment factors (CEF) varied within the same region due to nitrogen fertilizer application, where they ranged from 1.33 to 5.02. The soil selenium flow coefficient (mobility factor, MF) increased with higher nitrogen application rates. The sum of the MF values for each soil layer treated with nitrogen application rates of 192 kg hm-2 and 240 kg hm-2 was 0.70, which was 64% higher than that for the control group with no nitrogen application. In the 0-20 cm soil layer, the highest summed water-soluble and exchangeable selenium and relative percentage of total selenium (12.45%) was observed at a nitrogen application rate of 240 kg hm-2. In the 20-40 cm soil layer, the highest relative percentage content of water-soluble and exchangeable selenium and total selenium (12.66%) was observed at a nitrogen application rate of 192 kg hm-2. Experimental treatment of black wheat with various concentrations of sodium selenite showed that selenium treatment at 50 µmol L-1 significantly increased the reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in the leaves and roots of seedlings, where the GSH contents increased by 155.4% in the leaves and by 91.5% in the roots. Further analysis of the soil-black wheat system showed that nitrogen application in selenium-rich areas affected the soil selenium flow coefficient and morphological composition, thereby changing the enrichment coefficient for leaves (0.823), transport capacity from leaves to grains (-0.530), and enrichment coefficient for roots (0.38). These changes ultimately affected the selenium concentration in the grains of black wheat.

RESUMO

The flexible thermoelectric technique, which can convert heat from the human body to electricity via the Seebeck effect, is expected to provide a peerless solution for the power supply of wearables. The recent discovery of ductile semiconductors has opened a new avenue for flexible thermoelectric technology, but their power factor and figure-of-merit values are still much lower than those of classic thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate the presence of morphotropic phase boundary in Ag2Se-Ag2S pseudobinary compounds. The morphotropic phase boundary can be freely tuned by adjusting the material thermal treatment processes. High-performance ductile thermoelectric materials with excellent power factor (22 µWcm-1 K-2) and figure-of-merit (0.61) values are realized near the morphotropic phase boundary at 300 K. These materials perform better than all existing ductile inorganic semiconductors and organic materials. Furthermore, the in-plane flexible thermoelectric device based on these high-performance thermoelectric materials demonstrates a normalized maximum power density reaching 0.26 Wm-1 under a temperature gradient of 20 K, which is at least two orders of magnitude higher than those of flexible organic thermoelectric devices. This work can greatly accelerate the development of flexible thermoelectric technology.
